🔥 Cylinder Tests — Power Balance & Compression

How It Works

This test disables each fuel injector one at a time via bi-directional control (UDS Service 2F) and measures the RPM drop. A healthy cylinder that was doing real work will cause a noticeable RPM drop when disabled. A weak or dead cylinder will cause little or no drop.

⚠ Engine must be running at normal idle. Turn off A/C and accessories.

📊

Configure cylinder count and click "Run Power Balance Test" to begin.

🔧 Injector Coding (IMA/IQA)

After replacing fuel injectors, write the correction code (stamped on the injector body) to the PCM. Required for GDI and diesel engines.

📝 Write Access Note

Injector coding requires write access to the PCM, which may need security access authorization depending on the vehicle make. Ford, GM, and most domestic makes generally support this via OBD-II. European vehicles (BMW, VW/Audi, Mercedes) may require an enhanced adapter or manufacturer-specific access.

How to find the injector code:

  1. Look at the NEW injector body — there is a label or stamping with 6-7 characters
  2. This is the IMA (Injector Matching Authority) or IQA (Injector Quality Adjustment) code
  3. Select the cylinder where the new injector was installed
  4. Enter the code exactly as printed and click Write Code
  5. After writing all injectors, clear DTCs and start the engine
  6. The engine should idle smoothly — if not, recheck the codes
🔋 Register New Battery (Start-Stop Systems)

Required after battery replacement on vehicles with start-stop. Without registration, start-stop will not work and alternator may overcharge.

🔧 Programmable Module Installation (PMI) Wizard
🔧 Advanced Feature — Module Programming Capabilities Vary

Module backup and configuration reading works with most OBD-II adapters. Writing configuration or programming a replacement module requires manufacturer-specific security access and may require a J2534 adapter. Some modules (BCM, PCM, TCM) on newer vehicles can only be programmed with OEM software subscriptions. The wizard provides step-by-step guidance for all makes, but actual write capability depends on your adapter and vehicle.

⚠ WARNING: Module programming modifies critical vehicle systems. Incorrect programming can disable your vehicle. Always backup the old module first. Keep battery voltage stable during programming. Never interrupt the programming process.

Select a make and module to begin.
🔒 Security Gateway Authentication

Modern vehicles (2018+ Chrysler/Stellantis, 2022+ Toyota, 2020+ Nissan, some Mercedes) have security gateways that block write access. ScanFixAI reads/diagnoses these vehicles fine without any unlock. Note: AutoAuth-based gateway unlock is not available in this version (it requires an AutoAuth account & licensed credentials); for write access on 2018+ FCA vehicles, a 12+8 SGW bypass cable (~$25) is the reliable route.

🔐 AutoAuth API Configuration

Coming in a future update -- AutoAuth-based unlock is not functional in this version. Use a physical SGW bypass cable (below) for write access today.

Enter your AutoAuth Tool ID and Tool Secret to enable automatic SGW authentication. Sign up at autoauth.com and register your tool to get these credentials.

🔑 AutoAuth Credentials (Legacy)

Coming in a future update -- not functional in this version.

If you have legacy AutoAuth credentials (username + API key) instead of a Tool ID + Secret, enter them here. Sign up at autoauth.com (~$60/year per brand).

❓ Security Gateway Help

A security gateway is a module installed by the vehicle manufacturer that sits between the OBD-II diagnostic port and the vehicle's internal computer network (CAN bus). It allows read operations (scanning for codes, live data) but blocks write operations (clearing codes, resets, programming) from unauthorized tools. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized access to vehicle systems.

Option 1: Physical Bypass Cable (Recommended)

A bypass cable physically routes the CAN bus connection around the gateway module, giving your diagnostic tool direct access. This is the simplest and most reliable solution -- no software, no subscription, just plug it in.

Installation Steps (all makes)
  1. Locate the OBD-II port under the dashboard
  2. Unplug the factory OBD connector (if applicable)
  3. Connect the bypass cable between the port and your adapter
  4. Perform your write operations normally
  5. After completing work, remove the bypass cable and reconnect normally

Option 2: AutoAuth Cloud Service

AutoAuth is a third-party cloud service that authenticates your diagnostic tool with the vehicle's gateway. Requires an internet connection and a subscription (~$60/year per brand). Not available in this version -- the configuration forms above are disabled until AutoAuth integration is completed. Use the physical bypass cable option for write access today.

Visit autoauth.com to sign up
Remember: Read operations always work

Scanning modules, reading trouble codes, viewing live data, freeze frames, and readiness monitors all work without any bypass or authentication. The gateway only blocks write commands like clearing codes, service resets, and programming.

Help & FAQ

Common questions and troubleshooting for ScanFixAI.

Getting Connected

What OBD2 adapter do I need?

ScanFixAI works with ELM327-compatible OBD-II adapters. Recommended:

  • OBDLink MX+ (~$100) -- Best for Bluetooth (Android + Windows). Also supports J2534 for ECU programming.
  • OBDLink EX (~$70) -- Best for USB on Windows. Full J2534 support including ECU programming and Ford MS-CAN.
  • OBDLink CX (~$80) -- Best for WiFi

Both the OBDLink MX+ and EX support J2534 pass-through for advanced features like PCM programming — the same protocol Ford's own FDRS uses. Cheap $10-20 ELM327 clones work for basic code reading but cannot do programming. See the Adapter Guide for full details.

My adapter won't connect. What do I try?
  1. Make sure ignition is ON (not just accessory). Some vehicles need the engine running.
  2. Ensure the adapter is fully seated in the OBD-II port (under the dash, driver side).
  3. Windows USB: Check Device Manager for the COM port number. Try a different USB cable.
  4. Bluetooth: Pair the adapter in your phone's Bluetooth settings first, then connect in ScanFixAI.
  5. WiFi: Connect to the adapter's WiFi network before opening the app.
  6. Close the app, unplug the adapter, wait 10 seconds, plug back in, and retry.

Scanning & Diagnostics

How do I read diagnostic trouble codes?

Once connected, click Full Scan on the Dashboard. ScanFixAI reads codes from ALL modules (engine, transmission, ABS, body, etc.), not just the engine. Each code includes a plain-English explanation, severity level, and potential causes.

What do the severity levels mean?
  • CRITICAL -- Safety issue. Do not drive until resolved (brakes, airbags, steering).
  • HIGH -- Needs attention soon. Could cause further damage (misfire, transmission faults).
  • MEDIUM -- Should be addressed but not immediately dangerous (emissions, sensors).
  • LOW -- Minor or informational. May not affect drivability.
How does the AI diagnosis work?

The AI analyzes all your codes holistically -- it considers the relationships between codes, your specific vehicle (year/make/model/engine), known common failures, freeze frame data, and patterns across modules. The result is a root-cause diagnosis like an experienced master mechanic would give, not just a list of code definitions.

Free: 1 AI analysis per day. Pro: Unlimited.

Can I use AI Mechanic Chat without a vehicle?

Yes. AI Mechanic Chat works without a vehicle connection. Describe symptoms, ask about repair procedures, get part numbers, or get diagnostic advice. When connected to a vehicle, the AI has context about your specific car and its current codes.

Subscription & License

How do I activate my Pro license?

Go to the License tab, enter your key (SFAI-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX), and click Activate. Your license is bound to one device at a time -- deactivate first to move it.

Does my license auto-renew?

Yes. ScanFixAI Pro is a subscription ($29.99/month or $249.99/year) that renews automatically until you cancel. New users get a free 24-hour Pro trial first (no credit card required) to try every feature before buying. You can cancel anytime from your account; access continues through the end of the current billing period.

How do I get a refund?

Email support@scanfixai.com within 30 days of purchase with your purchase email. We will process a full refund within 5-7 business days.

I lost my license key

Email support@scanfixai.com from the email address you used when purchasing. We will look up your key and send it to you.

Troubleshooting

"No modules found" after scanning
  • Make sure the ignition is ON or engine is running
  • Check that the adapter is firmly seated in the OBD-II port
  • Try disconnecting and reconnecting in the app
  • Some vehicles need the engine running for all modules to respond
  • Cheap adapters may not support all protocols
Scan is very slow or timing out
  • Move closer to the vehicle (Bluetooth/WiFi signal)
  • Cheap ELM327 clones are significantly slower than OBDLink adapters
  • Try a different USB port or cable
Can I clear codes without a Pro license?

Yes. Code clearing is available on the free tier. Note that clearing codes does not fix the underlying problem -- if the issue persists, the codes will return.

Still need help?

We typically respond within 24 hours.

ⓘ About write features (ECU programming, module coding, key programming, tuning): These are in Preview in the current version. You can explore and simulate them, but ScanFixAI does not yet write changes to your vehicle — write support is enabled per make in a future update once we’ve validated it on real vehicles. All scanning, reading, live data, and AI diagnostics are fully available now.
Budget ELM327 ($15-30) BASIC ONLY

Any ELM327 v1.5+ adapter will let you read/clear codes, view live data, and get AI diagnosis. Good enough to get started. Avoid cheap $5 Amazon/eBay clones — they use counterfeit chips that cause connection issues and may miss codes. Stick to name-brand adapters like Veepeak, BAFX, or Vgate for reliable basic use.

Which Adapter Do I Need?
Just reading codes + AI diagnosis?

Any ELM327 v1.5+ Bluetooth adapter ($15-30) will work fine. Pair it with your phone or PC and you're set.

Coding, service resets, or enhanced data?

Get the OBDLink MX+ (Bluetooth, Android/PC) or OBDLink EX (USB, PC only). These support manufacturer-specific protocols.

Ford owner wanting full access?

Get the OBDLink EX. It's an affordable adapter with full Ford MS-CAN support — the hardware needed for as-built write and key programming. (In-app write & key-programming features are Preview in ScanFixAI v1.)

Professional shop or ECU programming?

You need a J2534 pass-thru device. This is the same interface dealers use for module programming, ADAS calibration, and reflashing.

2018+ Chrysler / Jeep / Dodge / Ram owner?

You also need a 12+8 SGW bypass cable (~$25) for write access. Reading codes and AI diagnosis works without it, but clearing codes and resets requires the bypass. Get one on Amazon.

🔒 FCA/Stellantis Security Gateway Bypass Cable
12+8 SGW Bypass Cable 2018+ FCA
OBD-II Bypass | ~$25
  • Required for write access on 2018+ Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram
  • Physically bypasses the Security Gateway module
  • Enables clearing codes, service resets, coding, bidirectional controls
  • Not needed for reading codes, live data, or AI diagnosis
  • Pre-2018 FCA vehicles do NOT need this cable
Search on Amazon →
What is a Security Gateway?

A Security Gateway (SGW) is a module installed by FCA/Stellantis between the OBD-II port and the vehicle's CAN bus. It allows read operations (scanning codes, live data) but blocks write operations (clearing codes, resets, programming) from non-dealer tools.

Affected Vehicles:

2018+ Jeep Wrangler, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Gladiator
2018+ Ram 1500, 2500, 3500
2018+ Dodge Charger, Challenger, Durango
2018+ Chrysler 300, Pacifica
Alfa Romeo Giulia, Stelvio | Fiat 500X

Important Notes
  • FCA Security Gateway (2018+): Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge/Ram vehicles from 2018+ have a gateway that blocks write operations. A $25 bypass cable (12+8 pin) physically routes around it. Reading codes and live data always works. Pre-2018 vehicles are not affected.
  • Ford MS-CAN: Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles have two CAN buses. Without MS-CAN support, you'll only see about half the modules (engine + trans, but not body, doors, instrument cluster, HVAC). Other makes use a single bus accessible by any adapter.
  • As-Built Write vs. Read: Reading as-built data requires a good adapter (MX+ or better). Writing as-built changes requires the OBDLink EX or J2534 — cheap adapters cannot reliably hold the timing needed for write operations.
  • Bluetooth vs. USB: USB is always faster and more reliable. Use USB (OBDLink EX) for any operation that takes time — like ECU programming, as-built writes, or extended logging. Bluetooth (MX+) is great for mobile/convenience use.
  • Fake ELM327 chips: If your $10 adapter drops connection, misses codes, or shows garbled data — it's probably a counterfeit chip. Upgrade to a name-brand adapter. This is the #1 support issue we see.
